Can I use plenum cable in a riser?

Yes. CMP is rated above CMR, so plenum cable may substitute for riser or general-purpose cable. The reverse is not allowed.

Can riser cable be run above a drop ceiling?

Only if that ceiling space is not used to handle environmental air. When the plenum above the ceiling is part of the HVAC return path, NEC Article 800 requires CMP cable or cable installed in an approved raceway.

Does plenum jacket change Cat6 performance?

No. Jacket rating is a fire-safety classification. NTI plenum and riser Cat6 share the same 23AWG solid bare copper construction and are swept to 550MHz against TIA-568.2-D.

Cat6 plenum vs. riser cable: what CMP and CMR actually mean

Plenum and riser describe the cable jacket's fire performance, not its network performance. The rating you need is set by the space the cable passes through, and inspectors check it. Here is the short version, then the details that decide most jobs.

The 30-second answer

CMP (plenum) is required in any space used to move environmental air — most commonly the return-air ceiling cavity above a drop ceiling.
CMR (riser) is for vertical runs between floors and other non-plenum pathways.
CMP can substitute for CMR anywhere. CMR can never substitute for CMP.

How the two ratings differ

Both ratings come from NEC Article 800 and are tested to different flame-spread standards. CMP cable is tested to NFPA 262 (the Steiner tunnel test) for limited flame travel and low smoke density in horizontal air-handling spaces. CMR cable is tested to UL 1666, a vertical shaft test that proves flame will not carry from floor to floor.

Picking the rating for your run

Ask whether the ceiling is a return-air plenum. If the HVAC system pulls return air through the ceiling cavity instead of ducting it, everything in that cavity has to be plenum rated.
Check the vertical pathway. Sleeves and shafts between floors call for CMR at minimum.
Decide whether to standardize. On mixed buildings, many crews buy plenum for the whole job. It costs more per box but removes the risk of the wrong reel landing on the wrong floor and failing inspection.
Confirm with the AHJ and the spec. Local amendments and owner specs sometimes require plenum beyond the NEC minimum.

Does the jacket affect certification?

No. Our plenum and riser Cat6 use the same 23AWG solid bare copper conductors and central spline, sweep tested to 550MHz and verified against TIA-568.2-D. Certification results come from conductor geometry, termination quality, and channel length — not the jacket compound. What the jacket does change is bend behavior: plenum jackets are stiffer, so respect the bend radius and keep pull tension under 25 lbf on 4-pair cable.
